I want to thank you for attending iPad Beyond The Basics. I hope that this online outline helps reinforce what you learned. I have included videos and links to various things I think you may find helpful. If you have any further questions don't hestiate to contact Mike.
This outline is intended only for people who have paid for and attended Get To Know Your iPad. Please do not share it with others. I have spent numerous hours putting it together. If you know someone who can't attend class, but would benefit from this outline they can purchase it for $19.
iCloud
iCloud is a set of online services that Apple offers to users for free that allow you to:
- Sync Information (Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Safari, Notes)
- Share Photos
- Locate your devices
- Back up data
Most people have an iCloud account (Apple sets one up for you the first time you use your iPad unless you decline - most people don't). Your iCloud account is typically the same username and password you use to download apps from the App Store.
You can set up iCloud to work on various devices. For instructions on how to setup iCloud click on the appropriate link below:
Note: To set up iCloud on a Mac you need Lion or Mountain Lion installed on your Mac. To set up iCloud on your Windows PC you need Windows 7 or Windows 8 installed on your PC.
When you enter a Contact on your iPad it syncs it to the iCloud and then syncs it to your Mac/PC, iPhone, and the iCloud website.
You can sync Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, and Safari info via iCloud. You must make sure that the switch is turned on for each of these items though. You can also sync your notes via iCloud, but you need to first set up the free iCloud email account by flipping the Mail button on in Settings > iCloud.

If you turn Find My iPad on in Settings > iCloud, you can locate your iPad via iCloud.com if the iPad is turned on and connected to the internet.
To backup your iPad to iCloud, you must first turn it on by tapping on Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup. Flip the switch to the On position for iCloud backup.
Note: Backing up to iCloud only takes place when you have it turned on in the Settings app, are plugged into a power source, the screen is locked, and you are connected to Wi-Fi.
You can use iCloud to Backup & Restore your iOS device.
- Purchased music, movies, TV shows, apps, and books
- Photos and video in the Camera Roll
- Device settings
- App data
- Home screen and app organization
- Messages (iMessage, SMS, and MMS)
- Ringtones
If you ever purchase a new iPad to replace your current one, all you have to do when setting up the new iPad is enter your iCloud info and you can downnload the contents of your previous iPad from your iCloud backup. I did this when I upgraded from the iPad 3 to the new iPad 4 and it worked flawlessly.

A couple things worth noting when it comes to the Contacts app:
- If you add a birthday to someone's contact information the iPad will show the birthday in the Calendar app.
- I would recommend that you make a point of typing in the first name and last name of each person you add to the Contacts app. This makes it easier later on when you are scrolling through the list because the iPad sorts people by last name and if you don't have last names for everyone it can get a little confusing.

You can edit contacts at any point. Don't feel like you have to add everyone to your Contacts app in one sitting. You could start just by adding people's first and last names. At another point you can go back in and add phone numbers and email addresses.
