EBOOKS
The three most common eBook apps for the iPad are:
- iBooks (Apple)
- Kindle (Amazon)
- Nook (Barnes & Noble)
iBooks is available for FREE in the App Store. In my opinion, iBooks is the best overall app for reading books on the iPad. I like the functionality and the fact that I can purchase books from within the app using the same account I use to purchase apps.

The iBooks Store is laid out to look very similar to the App Store. It is organized by the following areas:
- Featured
- NYTimes
- Top Charts
- Top Authors
On the Featured page you will find the FREE Book of the Week. The NYTimes page shows the New York Times Bestsellers in Fiction and Nonfiction. The Top Charts shows the most downloaded Paid and Free Books. The Top Authors page lists off some of the top authors for both Paid and Free books.
You can download a SAMPLE for all books that will allow you to get an idea what the book is like before you have to purchase it.
eBooks are typically less expensive than their real books.

I own a Kindle and purchase the majority of my books on that device. I find myself using the Kindle app on occasion. The nice thing about using the Kindle app is that it will automatically sync the books from my Kindle to the app on my iPad. If I turn the page on the Kindle it will turn the page on the iPad.
The Kindle app offers similar functionality to the iBooks and Nook app.
Note: You have to purchase books on Amazon's website and then they will become available to download in the app.
I have used the Nook app and it does a nice job but I don't own a Nook and I don't find myself using the Nook app that often. If you own a Nook it will automatically sync books just like the Kindle app does.
The Nook app offers similar functionality to the iBooks and Kindle app.
Note: You have to purchase books on Barnes & Noble's website and then they will become available to download in the app.
You can check out eBooks from your local library. I have listed out the app that you need to download for each county in the Twin Cities below:
- Anoka County: OverDrive Media Console & 3M Cloud Library
- Carver County: OverDrive Media Console
- Dakota County: OverDrive Media Console & 3M Cloud Library
- Hennepin County: OverDrive Media Console
- Ramsey County: OverDrive Media Console & 3M Cloud Library
- Scott County: OverDrive Media Console
- Washington County: OverDrive & 3M Cloud Library
- City of Northfied: OverDrive Media Console
- City of St. Paul: OverDrive Media Console & 3M Cloud Library
You can DOWNLOAD the OverDrive Media Console & 3M Cloud Library by clicking on the links in this sentence if you are reading this on your iPad or you can search for them via the App Store on your iPad.
Note: If you have the choice between OverDrive Media Console and 3M Cloud Library, I would recommend the 3M Cloud Library. It is a bit easier to use and you don't have to type in your library card number everytime you check out a book.
The following library systems allow you to check out electronic magazines via the Zinio app.
Newsstand is an app that comes with every iPad that is dedicated to downloading and displaying digital versions of newspapers and magazines.
Most newspaper and magazine apps are FREE. To download individual issues of a newspaper or magazine you will have to pay for the individual issue or pay for a monthly or yearly subscription.
If you have a physical subscription for a particular magazine or newspaper you can typically add your account info to the app and get free access to the digital version of the magazine or newspaper.
The iTunes Store is your one stop shop for Music, Movies, TV Shows, and Audiobooks. The iTunes Store is laid out in a very similar manner to the App Store and the iBooks Store.
If you purchase something from the iTunes Store, you always re-download it in the future for FREE if you delete the item off of your iPad.
You use the same account to purchase media from the iTunes Store as you do for the App Store.
iTunes Store: Frequently Asked Questions for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch is a useful resource if you have any questions about the iTunes Store.

Purchasing and downloading a song works just like the process for purchasing and downloading an app from the App Store. All songs that your purchase will be downloaded into the Music app on your iPad.
The Movies page is a collection of movies that Apple is featuring this week. You can purchase or rent movies (not all movies allow both options). You can also choose if you want HD quality (think Blu-Ray) or SD quality (think DVD). SD quality will save you a little money.
If you purchase a movie it will download to the VIDEOS app on your iPad. You can watch it as many times as you like. If you delete the movie after you are done watching it, you can always re-download it for FREE in the future.
If you rent a movie it will download to the VIDEOS app on your iPad. You have 30 days to start watching the movie. When you hit the play button, you have 24 hours to finish the movie. Once the 30 day or 24 hour limit runs out, the movie automatically deletes itself off of your iPad.
Since the movie (purchased or rented) is downloaded to your iPad, you can watch it even if you don't have an internet connection (car, airplane, etc).
The TV Show page is a collection of TV Shows that Apple is featuring this week. You can purchase entire seasons or individual episodes. You can also choose if you want HD quality (think Blu-Ray) or SD quality (think DVD). SD quality will save you a little money.
All TV Shows that you purchase from iTunes are commercial free.
If you purchase a TV Show it will download to the VIDEOS app on your iPad. You can watch it as many times as you like. If you delete the TV Show after you are done watching it, you can always re-download it for FREE in the future.
Note: You can also download apps for various television networks. ABC, CBS, NBC, and PBS have apps available in the App Store that let you watch TV shows for FREE. Various cable networks have apps as well, but you typically have to sign in with your cable or satellite TV account to be able to watch the TV shows.
The Audiobooks page is a collection of Audiobooks that Apple is featuring this week. Before purchasing audiobooks, I would recommend that you listen to the 90 second PREVIEW of the book to make sure that you are comfortable with the narrator's voice.
If you purchase an Audiobook it will download to the MUSIC app on your iPad. You can listen it as many times as you like. If you delete the Audiobook after you are done listening to it, you can always re-download it for FREE in the future.
The Top Charts displays the most downloaded Music, Movies, TV Shows, and Audiobooks.

If you would like to add music from your CDs into iTunes on the computer I would recommend that you check out this article on Apple's website for further instructions:

Once you start playing a song in the Music app you can leave the Music app and use other apps. The song will continue to play.
This is how Apple describes iTunes Radio:
“iTunes Radio is a free streaming radio with the best selection of music. It builds and brings together stations you’ll love from day one. And the more you listen, the more personalized your stations become. It’s radio re-imagined.”
iTunes Radio is FREE to use and is found in the Music app on iOS 7. You will hear the occasional ad in between songs and can subscribe to iTunes Match for $24.99 per year if you would like iTunes Radio to be commercial free.

If you like a song you can tell iTunes Radio and it will play songs that are similar to the song you liked. If you dislike a song, you can tell iTunes Radio to never play that song again on that station.
The more you tell iTunes Radio about the songs you like and dislike the better the station will become!

You can Tune This Station by tapping on the little circle with the i in the center. If you would prefer to listen to the Hits you can, if you prefer to listen to a Variety of Hits and lesser known music you can, and if you prefer to Discover lesser known music you can.
You can also choose whether the station will play Explicit Tracks.
Movies that your purchase or rent and TV Shows that you purchase will download and appear in the VIDEOS app.
A podcast is a multimedia digital file made available on the Internet for downloading to a portable media player, computer, etc.
Apple created a FREE app called PODCASTS that you can download from the App Store. You can use the PODCASTS app to download and listen to podcasts on your iPad.

When you subscribe to a podcast the app will auto download new episodes when they become available. You can also download individual episodes if you choose.
AirPlay is a technology that allows you to wirelessly send content from your iPad to an AirPlay compatible device.
AirPort Express
The AirPort Express allows you to plug in a set of speakers (my dad has his surround sound system plugged into the back of the AirPort Express) and send audio (Music, Podcasts, and Audiobooks) from your iPad to the speakers plugged into the AirPort Express.
The AirPort Express cost $99 and is available from Amazon, Best Buy, and the Apple Store.
Apple TV
The Apple TV plugs into your TV via a HDMI cable and allows you to send media (Music, Podcsts, Audiobooks, Movies, TV Shows, and Photos) to your TV. You can also mirror the iPad to the Apple TV so you can see exactly what is on your iPad screen on your TV (this allows you to surf the web, check email, play games).
The Apple TV cost $99 and is available from Amazon, Best Buy, and the Apple Store. You will also need to purchase a HDMI cable to plug the Apple TV into your TV. You can purchase one for approximately $6 on Amazon.
AirPlay compatiable speakers
There are numerous speakers that will work with your iPad. Some speakers have AirPlay built in and work over Wi-Fi. Most speakers use Bluetooth and require you to turn on Bluetooth on your iPad for you to be able to send audio to the speaker.
I would recommend the following speakers:
- Bose SoundLink Mini Bluetooth Speaker - $200
- Sony BTX500 - $250
- Logitech UE Mobile Boombox Bluetooth Speaker - $100

The Camera app allows you to take photos and record videos.
HDR (high-dynamic-range) photos can be taken with the iPad 3, iPad 4, and iPad mini. This feature allows the iPad to take three photos in rapid succession. These three photos are taken in standard, over, and under exposed modes and the three images are combined to produce the best picture. It works great for still photos, but not so great for pictures containing movement.
It is important to remember to not cover the microphone with your hand while recording a video.
When taking a picture with the iPad in landscape mode (horizontal), it is a good idea to make sure that the Home Button is on the right side of the screen. This will ensure that when you send the photos via email to someone on a PC that they won't be upside down.
I would highly recommend that everyone read this article from Macworld magazine about the Camera and Photos app:
Get to know iOS 7: Camera and Photos
I have come to the conclusion that the iPad is not where your photos should be for the long term. The reason for this is that most people have more photos than what can fit on their iPad. You will need to find a place for them to go if/when your iPad starts to reach its storage capacity.
This article on Apple's website shows you how to move photos from your iPad onto your Mac or PC:
iOS: Importing personal photos and videos from iOS devices to your computer
The iPad is a great place to put your favorite photos and some of your recent photos so you can share them with family and friends when you see them at gatherings.

If you sync photos from your computer and want to remove them at a later time, you will have to plug your iPad back into your computer and use iTunes to remove the photos. You won't be able to delete them directly from the iPad.
If you don't have iTunes on your computer, you can download it for FREE from iTunes.com.

If you would like to put your photos directly on the iPad from your camera you will need to purchase one of the following:
30 Pin Connector (Original iPad, iPad 2, iPad 3) - Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit
Lightning Connector (iPad 4, iPad mini) - Lightning To SD Card Camera Reader
Lightining Connector (iPad 4, iPad mini) - Apple Lightning to USB Camera Adapter
These adapters are very easy to use. You plug them into your iPad, plug in your camera or SD card, and the Photo app opens up, you tap Import on the bottom row, and you either tap on the individual photos that you want or tap Import All.
The Photos app attempts to organize your photos by Years, Collections, and Moments. You have no control over this process. If you would like to to create album of your favorite photos you can do that by tapping on Albums along the bottom bar and tapping the + sign in the upper left hand corner. It will ask you to name the album and choose what photos you want to appear in the album.

The Photos app allows you to perform basic edits:
- Rotate
- Enhance
- Filters
- Red-Eye
- Crop
If you make an edit and are unhappy with it, simply tap the Edit button and then tap on Revert To Original and you will undo any edits that you made.

The Photos app allows you to Share your photos in a variety of ways depending on how many photos you have selected.
- AirDrop
- Message
- iCloud
- Flickr
I recorded a YouTube video for iPad - Beyond The Basics that shows you how to share up to 200 photos at at time via iCloud.
